The story
The dawa was born at Carnivore, the Nairobi restaurant in Langata known for roasting meat on Maasai swords, which opened in 1980. Its bartenders started from the Brazilian caipirinha but swapped the cane spirit for vodka, reportedly because cachaça gave drinkers bad headaches. While they tested the new mix on guests, a regular, said to be the restaurant's landlord, kept asking for more of his dawa, Swahili for medicine, and the name stuck. A waiter called Dr Dawa still carries it around the dining room, and the drink has become the classic safari sundowner across East Africa.
Also known as dawa cocktail, Kenyan dawa.
On the Meridish menu
Dawa was the aperitif course on menu No. 32 on November 1, 2026. Its clue in the game, which hints at the place without naming it:
Vodka, lime and honey, stirred with a honey-coated stick. Its name means 'medicine' in Swahili, and it was born at a famous restaurant that grills meat on swords.
In Meridish, every dish is pinned to the town or city most widely credited with creating it. A guess within 25 km scores all 100 points. How scoring works.
