This policy covers the Meridish game at meridish.com and the Meridish apps for iPhone and Android. In it, "Meridish", "we" and "us" mean the team that runs the game. Questions go to hello@meridish.com.
What we collect
Your game
When you serve your first guess on a daily menu, the game creates a random player ID and a secret token. The token stays on your device, and we store only a scrambled (hashed) copy of it. Under that ID we store each guess you serve: the point you tapped on the map, how far it was from the dish's hometown, the points it scored, and when you played. Practice guesses never leave your device.
Your country, when you finish a menu
When you finish a daily menu, we note the country your connection comes from, as a two-letter code such as "FR". Cloudflare works this out from your IP address as your device connects. We use it only for the country league on Today's results. We don't store your IP address or anything more precise than the country.
How the game is used
We record a few moments: opening and starting a menu, sharing a result as text or an image, starting practice, and switching between light and dark. Each record includes the menu number, the platform (web, iPhone or Android) and, if you have one, your player ID.
Website visits
Our host, Cloudflare, counts page views on meridish.com with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which works without cookies and doesn't follow you to other sites.
What your device sends
Like any website or app, your device sends its IP address and basic details, such as the browser it uses, when it connects. Cloudflare uses these to deliver Meridish and protect it from abuse. We don't use them to work out who you are. Our server logs can hold request details for a few days so we can fix problems.
Messages to us
If you email us, we have your email address and your message, and we use them only to reply.
What we don't collect
- Your name, email address (unless you write to us), contacts or photos.
- Your precise location. Beyond the country noted when you finish a menu, we don't know where you are, and the point you tap on the map is a guess about a dish, not your location.
- Advertising IDs. There are no ads in Meridish.
We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
On your device
The game saves your progress, your player token and your settings (such as light or dark, and whether place names show) in your browser's local storage or in the app's own storage. Meridish doesn't set cookies. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie to tell people from bots.
How we use it
- To score your guesses, save your progress, and work out your stats and streak.
- To show how you compare: the share of players your guesses and score beat, your place among today's finished menus, combined results such as average points per course, and the country league. A country only appears in the league once at least three players from it have finished the day's menu.
- To show the "where everyone guessed" map. After you serve a course, you see other players' guesses for it as unlabeled dots, rounded to about 10 km. Your guesses appear the same way to others, never with your ID or anything that identifies you.
- To understand how the game is played, so we can improve it.
- To keep Meridish secure and working.
Who handles it
- Cloudflare hosts the website, the game's database and its usage records, and forwards email sent to hello@meridish.com. The game's database is in North America.
- Google hosts the inbox that email to hello@meridish.com is forwarded to.
- Apple and Google deliver the apps through their stores, under their own privacy policies.
How long we keep it
- Your guesses and scores, while they're needed for your stats and streak, or until you delete them.
- Usage records, for up to three months.
- Server logs, for a few days.
- Emails, for as long as we need them to help you.
Your choices
- Delete your data. On the web, use Delete my data on the Support page. In the app, tap the Meridish logo at the top of the game, then Delete my data. This removes your guesses, scores, stats and streak from our servers and your device.
- Ask for a copy, or ask a question. Email hello@meridish.com.
- Start fresh. Clearing your browser's data or reinstalling the app removes your player token from your device.
Children
Meridish is made for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
