Games like GeoGuessr.

Eight games for GeoGuessr fans, from free Street View guessers to map quizzes and daily puzzles: what each one shows you and which ones cost nothing.

The short answer

The closest games to GeoGuessr are WorldGuessr and OpenGuessr, two free browser games that drop you into Google Street View and ask you to pin where you are on a map. GeoGuessr itself is free to try: its Limited plan covers the daily challenge, and the paid Pro and Elite plans add unlimited play, more modes and games without ads.

For a lobby with friends, try Geotastic, a crowdfunded game built around multiplayer. City Guesser uses videos of walks through cities. Seterra, which GeoGuessr owns, is a quiz on blank maps, and Worldle and Globle give you one mystery country a day. Meridish, the game behind this site, scores your pin by distance the way GeoGuessr does, but it asks where a dish was born.

What GeoGuessr gives you free

GeoGuessr drops you into a Street View panorama somewhere in the world. You look around for clues and pin your guess on a map. Anton Wallén, a Swedish IT consultant, released it in May 2013. A classic game has five rounds worth up to 5,000 points each, so a perfect game scores 25,000. Plonk It, a site that teaches the game, notes that the score falls fastest near the target: on a world map, landing 30 km off costs you about 100 points, while the gap between 1,000 and 1,030 km costs fewer than 50.

The free plan, called Limited, lets you play the daily challenge. GeoGuessr's pricing page puts the rest on its paid Pro and Elite plans: every mode without time limits, games without ads, private parties, a creator mode for your own maps and quizzes, and the Steam version at no extra cost. The App Store listing names Duels and Battle Royale among the modes a subscription opens. A Pro member can invite friends who don't pay into a party or challenge.

WorldGuessr

WorldGuessr gives you the GeoGuessr loop in a browser: you look around a Street View scene and drop a pin on the map. Its home page promises unlimited rounds, and you can play solo without signing up. A free account opens ranked 1v1 and 2v2 duels and keeps your stats, and you can also set up a private party for friends. The site says ads pay for every mode.

Players have built more than 79,000 maps of their own, by the site's count, alongside 93 official country maps. The code is public on GitHub under a non-commercial licence.

OpenGuessr

OpenGuessr describes itself as a free GeoGuessr alternative with unlimited playtime and multiplayer. Its menu offers solo maps such as World and Capital Cities, a multiplayer section and a daily competition. In a comparison page published in September 2026, OpenGuessr's team says every mode is free, accounts are optional and one ad slot shows during play. Supporter packs are one-time purchases that add cosmetic extras such as a custom pin, and the 6.99 USD pack and above removes the ads.

Duels run five rounds, and wins raise your Elo rating. Custom rooms are free and need no account from anyone in them, and Image Guessr swaps Street View for photographs.

Geotastic

Geotastic calls itself "the free crowdfunded multiplayer geo quiz app", and its home page leads with playing together. You create a free account to reach highscore hunts, hundreds of challenges and maps, and online matchmaking. Quick play takes you and up to two friends into a game in a few clicks. Rounds include random Street View drops, landmarks and a flag mode, and an online GeoBingo mode sends you hunting for scenes to fill a bingo card.

Custom online lobbies, where you invite your own group, open at Supporter Level 1, a one-time payment of 3 EUR. They also open for everyone once other players' donations cover that month's API costs. Ads keep the service running, and a donation removes them.

City Guesser

City Guesser uses video. Each round plays footage filmed as someone walks down a street or through a park, and you click the map where you think it was shot. The game launched on 13 August 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to let people see the world while they were stuck indoors.

You pick a region first: worldwide, the USA, Europe, Asia, famous monuments or one of several single countries. There are streak modes and timed challenges too, and you can create a private server to play with friends. The about page lists the giveaways to watch for, including number plates, flags, road signs and business names. Geography Realm suggests playing with the sound on, because the language you hear in the background can place a city. City Guesser is free and asks for donations to stay that way.

Seterra

Seterra is a map quiz, and GeoGuessr bought it in 2022. The quizzes now run on GeoGuessr's own website. Seterra dates back to 1997, comes in more than 40 languages and holds over 400 quizzes on countries, capitals, flags, oceans, lakes and more, down to the provinces of single countries. Each quiz has two game modes, Pin and Type.

On the web you can start a quiz without an account and log in to save your results. Learn mode asks you to upgrade. On iPhone, the App Store lists Seterra Geography (full) as free, with more than 300 games and no ads or in-app purchases. If GeoGuessr rounds leave you unsure where one country ends and the next begins, Seterra drills that.

Worldle and Globle

For one short puzzle a day, Worldle shows you the outline of a country or territory and gives you six tries. Each wrong answer comes back with a distance, an arrow toward the target and a closeness percentage. Globle hides a mystery country and paints each wrong guess on a globe, in a hotter colour the closer it lands, with no limit on attempts. Both serve a new puzzle every day. The daily geography games guide covers both in more detail.

Meridish

Meridish is a daily food geography game, and it scores you the way GeoGuessr does, by distance. Every day everyone gets the same seven-course tasting menu, from the aperitif to the dessert. For each dish you see a photo, read a clue and tap the map where you think it was born. The answer is a town or city, and the clue never names the place. You score up to 100 points a course, the full 100 within 25 km, and up to 700 for the whole menu.

After each course you see how much closer you were than other players, and everyone else's guesses appear as dots on the map. You can also type a town or city into Find a place, and the map works by keyboard. A menu takes about three minutes. It's free in your browser with no account, and a new one arrives every day at midnight UTC. The how to play page has the scoring in full, or you can open today's menu.

You can mix them. Play GeoGuessr's free daily challenge, then carry on in WorldGuessr or OpenGuessr once it's done. Seterra builds the map knowledge that helps your pins land closer in the Street View games. Meridish takes about three minutes, so it fits alongside any of them.

How GeoGuessr players read clues

Most rounds sit on a road, so Plonk It's beginner's guide starts with the driving side. Most countries in the game drive on the right, so left-hand traffic cuts the list down. With no traffic in sight you can still tell: traffic signs stand on the side cars drive on, part of the Google car sometimes shows in the picture, and on dirt roads you may see a trail of dust behind it.

Writing comes next. Most countries in the game use the Latin alphabet, so you learn the accents that set one language apart from another, while several countries, many of them in Asia, have scripts of their own that give the country away at a glance. Web domains help too, though some catch you out: .ch stands for Switzerland.

Bollards, the small safety posts beside the road, look different in most countries that use them. Spain and Germany both use white, wedge-shaped bollards, and the yellow front reflector marks the Spanish one. Road lines narrow the field as well. Double yellow centre lines are the most common kind in the United States, and Norway is the only country in northern Europe with long dashes along the outer edge.

On an empty road, look at the sun. If it hangs in the southern part of the sky, you're in the Northern Hemisphere, and the reverse holds south of the equator. Plonk It warns that between the tropics the summer sun can sit on the other side, so trust it only when it sits nearer north or south than east or west.

Questions

What is the best free alternative to GeoGuessr?

WorldGuessr and OpenGuessr come closest. Each calls itself a free GeoGuessr alternative, uses Street View and lets you play solo without an account or duel other players. Ads pay for both. For lobbies with friends, try Geotastic.

Is GeoGuessr free?

You can play GeoGuessr's daily challenge free on its Limited plan. Unlimited play, games without ads and multiplayer modes such as Duels and Battle Royale come with a paid Pro or Elite plan. The App Store listing says the app is free to download and offers some gameplay for free.

Are there games like GeoGuessr without Street View?

Yes. City Guesser plays videos of walks through cities, and Seterra quizzes you on blank maps. Worldle shows a country's outline, and Globle colours your guesses on a globe. In Meridish you see a dish and a clue, and you pin the town or city where it was born.

Is there a GeoGuessr for food?

Meridish works the same way with dishes. Each day you get seven courses, read a clue for each and tap the map where the dish was born, scoring up to 100 points by distance. It's free at meridish.com.

What does Seterra do?

Seterra is a map quiz site with over 400 quizzes on countries, capitals, flags, oceans, lakes and more. You can play each quiz in Pin mode or Type mode. GeoGuessr bought Seterra in 2022, and the quizzes now run on GeoGuessr's website.

Can you play GeoGuessr with friends for free?

A GeoGuessr Pro member can invite friends who don't subscribe into a party or challenge. Without a subscriber in the group, WorldGuessr's private parties, OpenGuessr's custom rooms and Geotastic's quick play for you and two friends cost nothing.
